Commenting on a speech today by US President Obama on the national security implications of climate change, Rear-Admiral Neil Morisetti, Former Commander of UK Maritime Forces, said that climate change poses a threat to the national security of all countries.
Rear-Admiral Morisetti said: “In highlighting the national security implications of climate change today, President Obama is not just talking about a risk to the security of the United States.
“The impact of a changing climate poses a threat to the national security of all nations, which in turn will affect our prosperity and well being.
“Action, through a commitment by Governments to a low carbon energy strategy, is required now to reduce these risks; there is no security solution to climate change.”
The White House has also released a new report on the national security implications of climate change, and how the US Federal government is rising to the challenge. President Obama delivered his speech to graduates of the US Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut today.
