Commenting on analysis from the Climate Change Committee (CCC) on the outcomes of the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the next steps for the UK [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"With 2024 about to end as the first year with average temperatures that are more than one a half degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels [2], the world has have never needed leadership on climate change more. COP29 under-delivered on cutting emissions, adapting to climate impacts, and providing sufficient finance for the poorest countries on the frontline of those impacts. But the COP process remains intact as global markets drive the clean energy transition forwards, and one year above 1.5°C doesn’t mean the Paris Agreement target is lost.

"UK leadership in Baku was an important part of this, and is backed time and again by polls that show Brits want their government to lead the way, in the face of climate change’s threat to our food, economic and national security. Having presented an ambitious and leading-edge new emissions target early, the job ahead for the UK, working in close collaboration with COP30 hosts Brazil, is to encourage and support others to do the same, whilst delivering on its target at home. This is a critical year for closing the emissions gap between a liveable future and one of worsening, and ever more costly climate disasters."
