Commenting on the Budget announcement that the Government will extend the existing scope of agricultural property relief from 6 April 2025 to habitats created under government environmental schemes, Tom Lancaster, land analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
“This removes a significant barrier to farmers and landowners creating habitats such as wetlands and woodlands. By absorbing and storing carbon, they will help slow climate change, and can play a valuable role in slowing the flow of floodwater, protecting farmland and communities from the worsening impacts of extreme weather.”
