Responding to the floods in Valencia that have killed at least 95 people [1] Gareth Redmond-King, international analyst at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

"The shocking scenes and loss of life in Valencia should be a wake-up call about the devastation climate change wreaks on people’s lives and livelihoods [2]. This is not about future events in a far-off place with a dramatically different climate from the UK. Spain is one of our nearest neighbours, the top tourist destination for Brits, and a major source of our food supplies [3].

"A quarter of food imports to the UK come from the Mediterranean [4], with 7%, worth around £4 billion, from Spain alone. Much of that is fresh food that is important for our health - half the lemons we import, two thirds of our olive oil, two fifths of our sweet peppers and a third of our oranges. Even foods we grow here for part of the year, we rely hugely on Spain for. It provided three quarters of  cauliflower and broccoli and a fifth of our onion imports - all crops hit by the wettest winter ever in the UK, as well as by extremes in Spain."
