Commenting on analysis from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) which finds that 2025 is set to be the second or third warmest year on record [1] Gareth Redmond-King, International Programme Lead at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"Nations are gathering for the start of the COP30 climate summit at the end of a year that has seen devastating hurricanes, wildfires and flooding across the world; here at home, we've seen the second worst harvest as a result of climate change. [2]
"Coming alongside warnings that current pledges still drive us to a dangerous level of temperature rise [3], this reminder that 2025 is set to be the second or third hottest on record should focus leaders' minds. Net zero emissions is the only solution we have to halt climate change, to limit the worsening danger and rising costs which this represents, and bring the climate system back into balance.
"Ten years of the Paris Agreement has got us part of the way, slowing emissions and ramping up clean energy [4], with signs now that even China is seeing emissions peak. So the job ahead at the UN climate summit is clear, if we want to achieve that balance: to close the emissions gap and speed up implementation of country pledges to get on track for net zero."
