Commenting on a new GB Energy project to put rooftop solar panels on schools and NHS sites [1], Jess Ralston, Energy Analyst at the ECIU, said:

"This GB Energy funding for solar is essentially government investment into lower energy bills for the NHS and schools, which lowers costs for taxpayers from the public sector in the longer term. Not only this, but it's an investment into energy security as solar panels lower the amount of gas we need to import from people like Putin, representing a path to energy independence for the public sector which has been hit hard by rocketing bills over the past few years of the gas crisis.

"It's a good first step after underinvestment for decades, but if we want to reduce the impact of future energy price spikes, experts are clear that more needs to be done on energy efficiency and moving away from gas boilers to wean the UK off foreign gas imports, which should stabilise bills."

Notes to editors:

1. The announcement, Great British Energy to cut energy bills for hospitals and schools, is published on 21 March.

2. The Energy Crisis Commission found that the UK is dangerously underprepared for, and at risk of, another energy crisis because it remains heavily reliant on gas for electricity and home heating: https://energycrisiscommission.uk/
