Commenting reports that Government officials have blocked publication of a report warning that the collapse of tropical rainforests could push up food prices in British supermarkets [1] Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
“It’s important the public has an accurate understanding of the threats that climate change brings, but also that reaching net zero emissions is the only way to bring balance back to the climate and prevent ever worsening extremes. The longer we delay reaching net zero, the greater the risk of setting in motion irreversible changes to our natural world that would in turn threaten our ability to feed ourselves as a country.
“We import two fifths of our food from overseas, much of which like rice and bananas we can’t really grow in the UK. Climate change is already adding hundreds of pounds to the average British household food bill. Last year saw the UK’s third worst harvest on record. So unless we bring emissions down, and invest in farmers in the UK and abroad, our food supply is not secure.”
