Commenting on analysis showing that renewables generated more electricity than coal globally in the first half of 2025 [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"As we hit the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, the evidence is everywhere of the sea change it has helped drive. Over the last decade, the pace of growth in planet-heating emissions has slowed five-fold to the point now where China’s emissions may have peaked [2].

"The UK has played it’s part, kicking off the offshore wind industry which is now a not only powering Britain, but those early investments also catalysed tens of thousands of turbines all around the world that are all helping to reduce emissions. The momentum towards clean technologies is clearly unstoppable, and those like Trump who are trying to hold back the tide won’t stop it, with 85% of investment outside the US."
