The Environment Agency (EA) announcement covers much of central, eastern and southern England, and is a public sign that further restrictions on water use might follow.

Commenting on the declaration of drought across much of England [1], Tom Lancaster, land, food and farming analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
“Climate change is now taking us into uncharted territory, with two consecutive summers of drought hammering farmers, wildlife and our public water supplies. With one of the wettest winters on record [2] in between, the predictions of warmer, wetter winters and hotter drier summers for the UK that climate scientists have long warned us about is now a reality.
“This weather whiplash is making farming in the UK incredibly precarious. Farmers are on the front line of climate change, and after hopes for a better harvest earlier in the year, many are now looking at the very real prospect of a third terrible harvest in a row following extreme weather [3]. With climate change to ‘unequivocally to blame' for the severity of this summer's heatwaves [4], reducing emissions to net zero is now a very real imperative for a future food and water security.”
