Commenting on Cornwall Insight's predictions that Ofgem's energy price cap, to be announced next week, will fall slightly (-7%) from April 2026, [1], Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
“Bills look set to fall slightly in April, welcome news for households that have seen debt rise to record levels because of the energy crisis. But that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods, as recent gas price volatility saw prices reach an 11-month high [2]. Renewables offer stability from global geopolitical uncertainty and last year, wind power in the UK lowered the wholesale power price by around a third [3].
Investing in upgrading our ageing infrastructure after years of slow progress is essential to reinforcing our energy security and reducing waste on the energy system as today we can’t make the most of cheaper renewables coming online. Strengthening the grid and building more renewables will ultimately cut costs for households by reducing our need for more expensive gas-fired power stations, easing bottlenecks, and allowing cheaper clean power to flow where it’s needed.
