Commenting on the news that Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has dropped his party’s pledge to achieve net zero emissions in Wales by 2035 [1], Laura Dunn, Senior Associate at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:
"Communities across Wales are wrestling with the impacts of flooding and heavy rain that have been made more likely as a result of our changing climate. Politicians often miss this bit out, but the science is clear - the only way to prevent these climate impacts from worsening is by reaching net zero emissions, bringing balance to the climate.
"As well as protecting Wales from the worst effects of climate breakdown, the net zero transition is a major growth opportunity for the Welsh economy, with the net zero economy growing by over ten percent in 2024 [2]."
But in order for the green economy to continue to grow, investors need long-term certainty and confidence that a clear timeline brings.”
