Commenting on the news that Qatar is to fully shut down gas liquefaction [1], Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"Like so many conflicts before it, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, oil and gas is so often intertwined with war. The news that Qatari production of LNG will likely be shut down for weeks points to a sustained increase in gas prices which will, as analysis is already suggesting [2], ultimately push up bills for UK homes and businesses.
"Day by day, this conflict in the Middle East is a stark reminder of the UK’s heavy reliance on gas for home heating and power generation, just like the Russian invasion of Ukraine did a few years ago, with that crisis costing the UK over £180bn. [3] Net zero technologies like wind, solar and heat pumps stabilise bills and bring energy independence by reducing our reliance on gas and the countries that control its supply. Poll after poll shows the majority of British people see renewables as the solution rather than trying to extract more oil and gas." [4]
