Commenting on the AR7a Budget Notice for renewables that was issued today [1], Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

"This so-called budget is highly unlikely to be added to bills. It’s based on outdated estimates for future power prices that are very different to expert forecasts, with the Treasury not getting very far on updating them in recent years. Prices of gas will always be volatile with the cost of the energy crisis reaching the equivalent of £6,400 per UK household [2], so ensuring that we reduce our dependence on it is crucial.

“British wind and solar is already lowering the cost of wholesale electricity by around a quarter, or £25/MWh [3], and will carry on lowering prices as more is built to replace older, less efficient gas plants being pushed out of the market. Every bit of wind and sun power that we harness means we need to buy less foreign gas from abroad, boosting our energy security."
