Commenting on analysis showing that China’s CO2 emissions have now been ‘flat or falling’ for 21 months [1], Peter Chalkey, director of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said: “Suggestions that carbon dioxide emissions from China, the world's biggest emitter, are flat or falling are highly significant. Even if more coal power stations are being built, they aren’t being used at capacity as evidenced by emissions from China’s electricity generation sector falling [2] .

“This could be a critical milestone on the world’s journey to reaching net zero emissions which the science is clear is the only way we have to halt climate change, bringing balance back to our climate system.”
