Commenting on new research indicating that the critical Atlantic current systems appears much more likely to collapse [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:
"The only scientific solution there is to avoiding a nightmare scenario like this is to cut our emissions to net zero. The urgency to reach net zero emissions is clear, given every bit of carbon pollution increases the risk of this kind of tipping point occurring.
"This sort of collapse would plunge the UK and neighbouring countries into extreme cold of the sort that would leave British farmers struggling to grow food [2]. We’ve already seen three of the worst harvests on record in the last five years, but this would pale in comparison to weakening of the AMOC [3]."
