Commenting on the results of the Senedd election, Laura Dunn, Senior Associate at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

"The seismic shifts we’ve seen comes as Welsh voters said their number one concern was the cost of living, with energy, food and fuel bills their top worries. [1] Two oil and gas crises in a row have combined with extreme weather impacting crop harvests, having a destabilising effect on Welsh politics with households feeling that politics isn’t working for them and that things are getting worse, not better.

"It's also clear that the majority of Welsh voters support the homegrown renewables which can shield their energy bills from volatility in gas prices, as well as the country’s 2050 target to hit net zero emissions – the only scientific way the world can stop climate change. Even among Reform voters, only one in ten said that their vote was motivated by a desire to rollback policies to limit climate change”.
