Commenting on Government plans announced today (9 Jan) to make farming more profitable, support British food production and and bolster food security [1], Tom Lancaster, land, food and farming analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said:

“Farmers have felt the impacts of extreme weather perhaps more than any other sector in recent years, with droughts followed by floods and relentless rain, all made worse by climate change. Last year saw one of the worst harvests on record [2], and no plan for the UK’s food security will work without bringing global emissions down to net zero.

“In the meantime, restoring nature to build resilience back into farming will help as Defra’s new green farming schemes support farmers to restore their soils, plant hedgerows and create new wetlands, all helping to safeguard food production and channel flood waters away from communities and our best farmland. Improving grid connections for on farm wind and solar will also enable the industry to play its part in generating more British energy boosting our energy security, whilst having little impact on the land needed to grow food.” [3]
