Commenting on today's release of the Government's independent review of Greenhouse Gas Removals [1], Tom Cantillon, senior analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:
"Greenhouse gas removal (GGR) is vital for tackling the climate crisis. Although it can only ever be additional to real, transformative emissions reductions, GGR can play a key role in boosting Britain's economy and protecting our society against the worst impacts of climate change.
"The independent GGR Review confirms the leadership role the UK can play in scaling GGR methods, and the opportunities that can be seized in doing so to restore British nature; provide well-paid jobs in industrial heartlands; and enable better adaptation through new woodlands and restored peatlands. Despite the real challenges that exist, removing the carbon dioxide that is driving increasingly extreme weather is a vital part of reaching net zero, and bringing our climate back into balance."
The review makes clear that significant regulatory, economic and technical barriers exist to responsibly scaling GGRs. Of particular note are the land use constraints impacting GGR scaling, particularly around biomass availability for Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). The Government's upcoming Land Use Framework will be a critical next step in providing a joined up approach to land use in the UK. This is expected to be published by the end of the year, although could be further delayed.
