Responding to the results coming in from the United States midterm elections [1], Gareth Redmond-King, Head of International Programme at ECIU said:
“Trump urged American voters to behave like he was on the ballot. They seem to have done just that, and decisively rejected the petrol and diesel prices that have been driven to record highs by his Iran war, which is also showing up in rising food costs, exacerbating pressure on household budgets.
"For all Trump's calls to drill the North Sea, that won't bring down energy bills. The very things he stands against - renewables, electric vehicles - are the best line of defence for the UK against further volatility. As we head into COP31, the UK has a chance to show it means business on moving towards secure, electrified energy resources, shielding Britons from the whims of Trump and other actors like him who still have the power to upend global oil and gas markets, and drive up prices."
