Commenting on advice published today by the Climate Change Committee (CCC) on the UK’s 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) [1], Peter Chalkley, Director of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU)said: “Today’s advice is based on the ‘carbon budgets’ which were instituted by politicians through the Climate Change Act as important milestones to guard against the short-termist tendencies of politics to duck or delay the consistent long-term policy needed to gradually bring down emissions.

“Science is clear that reaching net zero emissions is imperative to slow and stop the worsening of climate extremes. A commitment to net zero now covers 93% of global GDP and, if adopted, this target would also act as a signal to international investors hungry for opportunities to capitalise on this global growth megatrend.”
